July '10 First Friday - 4th of July HIATUS

First Friday is on hiatus this month, due to proximity to the 4th of July holiday weekend.  We look forward to seeing you at the August 2010 First Friday gathering, and will update this space once topic information is confirmed.

June 2010 First Friday - Barbara Graham, Esq. - Legal Services for Immigrants (Catholic Charities)

Our breakfast speaker this month is Barbara Graham, Esq., who runs the Legal Services for Immigrants ministry sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.  Barbara and a small team of lawyers serve newcomers to the United States who are seeking to become citizens or reunify with family members living in the United States, individuals trying to secure asylum or temporary protection in the U.S., and immigrant victims of domestic violence.

As usual, the "First Friday" Mass will begin at 7:30 A.M. in the Chapel of the Holy Family located on the 2nd floor of the Marquette Memorial Union (15th and Wells). The meeting and discussion follows after mass from 8:00-9:00 A.M. over a continental breakfast (suggested donation $4.00).   There is no need to RSVP. We look forward to seeing you there!

 

6th Annual Midwest Regional Bioethics Conference - May 1, 2010

For the information and interest of the membeship, we wish to breifly mention the upcoming Midwest Regional Bioethics Conference, to be held on May 1, 2010 at the St. Francis Seminary, in St. Francis, WI.

The program is organized around the theme of the "Moral Limits of Authority," and is sponsored by the Milwaukee Guild of the Catholic Medical Association, the Catholic Physicians' Guild of Chicago, the Nazareth Project of the John Paul II Center of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and the Hektoen Institute.  The program has been approved for 4.5 CLE credits total, including 1.0 EPR credit.  The registration form, and conference schedule with more speaker and topic information is available for download.

 

March '10 First Friday - Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell - Canonization of John Hardon, S.J.

Our breakfast speaker this month is Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell of Trinity Academy, who will speak on the canonization process for an American priest, John Hardon, S.J.  Dr. Mitchell is the Notary and Expert for the Cause.  See http://www.hardonsj.org.

February 5, 2010 First Friday - Fr. Tom Anderson, S.J. Marquette University Law School Chaplain

We are please to annouce that our speaker for the February 5, 2010 First Friday gathering will be Father Tom Anderson, S.J., the new chaplain at the Marquette University Law School. This is Fr. Anderson’s first year in such role. He will comment generally on his role and inquire of members in attendance their beliefs as to the role of such a chaplain, including any observations, experiences or thoughts they may have in that regard.  We look forward to learing more about Fr. Anderson and to hearing both his comments and anecdotes, and those of the attendees.

December '09 First Friday - Bruce Arnold - Faith in Our Future Trust

The December 2009 First Friday gathering featured the Society's President-elect, Bruce Arnold.  Bruce is Trustee of "Faith in Our Future Trust".  Bruce will speak about this Trust, which was created to receive the gifts made in the historic $105 million campaign to strengthen Catholic education and faith formation in Southeast Wisconsin. Happy New Year 2010 - First Friday Hiatus.

As Friday is New Year's Day, there will be no First Friday gathering this month.

Red Mass - 2009 - Thank you

The Society wishes to extend a special thank you to all those who attended this year's Red Mass.  The event was well attended, and quite enjoyable by all accounts.  Special acknowledgement should be given to the Red Mass Committee ... whose efforts were instrumental in the successful execution of the event.

We also thank Fr. Wild, Dean Kearney, and our Faithful Servant Award Recipient, Tom Mountin for their well considered remarks.

First Friday - November '09 - Rebecca K. Blemberg - Virtue, Ethics and the Lawyer as Statesman

The First Friday gathering for November 2009 was held on November 2, 2009, and featured Rebecca K. Blemberg, Assistant Professor of Legal Writing at Marquette University Law School, who spoke on the subject of "Virtue, Ethics and the Lawyer as Statesman."  

 

October '09 First Friday - Peter Heyne - The Lawyer / Saint Fr. Alberto Hurtado S.J.

The St. Thomas More Lawyers Society of Wisconsin will have its next "First Friday" gathering this Friday, October 2, 2009. Mass will begin at 7:30 A.M. in the Chapel of the Holy Family located on the 2nd floor of the Marquette Memorial Union (15th and Wells). Mass will be followed by a meeting and discussion from 8:00-9:00 A.M. over a continental breakfast (suggested donation $4.00).

Our speaker during the breakfast this month will be Peter Heyne, a law student at Marquette University and outgoing President of the Society’s student chapter at Marquette.  This past week, a delegation from a Jesuit law school in Chile is visiting Marquette University.  The law school is named after a recently canonized saint, Fr. Alberto Hurtado, S.J., who was a lawyer and social activist.  Peter will discuss with us this lawyer-saint.

Parking is available on Wells Street or in one of the nearby campus lots.
